Jamiroquai have chosen 2017 as the year of their long-awaited comeback.

The British band fronted by multitalented singer/songwriter Jay Kay played no small part in galvanizing London’s acid jazz movement in the ’90s. Following a six-year hiatus, they have announced that their eighth studio album, Automaton, will arrive on March 31st in addition to unveiling the music video for its title track.

“Automaton” is driven just as much by Kay’s stylish vocals as it is by the underlying production’s somewhat Daft Punk-reminiscent sound design. A series of strategically placed off notes give the song an artful amount of discord, and the apparently high-budget music video suggests that Jamiroquai’s return has been quite carefully calculated.

In regards to Automaton, Jay Kay has said:

“The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings.”

Automaton will arrive by way of Virgin EMI. In the time between now and the end of March, Jamiroquai is sure to release more singles to generate buzz for the upcoming album.
