2016 may have been the year of electronic music reunions, but another legendary act has now followed suit. After last year saw the likes of Sasha & Digweed, Rabbit In The Moon and Pendulum get back together, Orbital has announced that they will take to the stage for the first time in five years.
The English breakbeat/experimental duo, which consists of the brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, is slated to perform at Dublin festival Forbidden Fruit in June. In July, they will appear at the festival Bluedot in Cheshire and Standon Calling in Hertfordshire.
Orbital had made a name for themselves near the turn of the millennium – particularly for their 1999 album, The Middle Of Nowhere. For the five years that they had split up, both brothers have said that they also did not speak to one another.
Paul Hartnoll told Mixmag:
I didn’t speak to Phil for five years after we split in 2012. It was horrible. It’s like a black stain on your heart. You feel terrible and you want to fix it…I tried to turn Phil into me, and that drove us both mad. Now it’s just, be yourself. Be you. So far it’s working brilliantly. It’s really good to be talking and working together again.
Phil said:
I didn’t want to split up in the first place. For me it was always never say never again. But sometimes you need that break, so we left each other alone for a couple of years. And now it’s all come round again.
In addition to the new tour dates, Orbital also announced that they were back in the studio working on a follow up to their 2012 effort, Wonky. As of right now, they still have yet to publicly disclose a title, release date or any other information.
