Sad news sends shockwaves through the electronic music community today as DJ and producer Robert Miles has died at the age of 47. The trance and progressive house pioneer passed away in Ibiza, where he had relocated a few years prior, of an as-yet-undisclosed illness on the evening of May 10th local time.
Miles was perhaps most famous for his 1994 single “Children,” which had sold 350,000 copies throughout Europe within two weeks of its release. Along with later songs like “Fable” and “Freedom,” it played no small role in shaping the emerging aesthetic of trance music. To date, it has sold upwards of 5,000,000 copies worldwide.
In regards to Miles’ untimely death, friend and longtime collaborator Joe T. Vanelli remarked:
“The tragic news of the death of a very talented artist of our time makes me incredulous and upset. With him also it is a part of my life as an artist manufacturer. I will miss the fights, brawls, criticism, judgments but especially your talent in finding unparalleled sounds and melodies.”
We here at djbios express our condolences to the family and friends of Robert Miles at this time.
