After a slew of Ibiza nightclubs were shut down following raids in conjunction with Operation Chopin, the White Isles will likely look unrecognizable in 2017. A series of proposed legislations would only add insult to injury if passed, as it would impose new noise and capacity restrictions on venues moving forward.
The Sant Josep Town Council will discuss an ordinance requiring attendees of nightclubs, beach bars and other venues to pass through sensors put in place to closely monitor each space’s head count. In addition, they will deliberate on the expansion of article 26 of the Tourism Law, which would mean stricter limitations on decibel levels for such establishments.
By September of last year, Operation Chopin had affected 87 venues – including the likes of Pacha, Space, Privilege and Ushuaïa, each of which had been under investigation for tax fraud and other offenses. Between the closures of some of the resort destination’s most historic clubs and the proposed legislations, Ibiza will practically look like a different island altogether in the years to come.
Preliminary Sant Josep Town Council meetings regarding the ordinances will take place this Thursday, January 26th. The Ibiza nightlife circuit’s active season doesn’t start until late spring, meaning that local lawmakers have ample time to debate the proposed changes.
