Jeff Mills reserves a place in the upper echelon of American techno, so when he teased a new album in January the electronic music community stood at attention. The Detroit DJ and producer has filled in the rest of the blanks by revealing the track list for the effort.
Planets will arrive by way of Mills’ own Axis Records on March 31st, and will consist of nine songs – each of which are named after a different planet in our solar system. In addition, a Blu-Ray release will comprise an 18-part journey with what Mills calls “transit loops” between each planet.
Being that he’s an early Detroit techno pioneer, Mills’ music exhibits a more melodic iteration of the genre’s subversive sounds. Beyond music alone, he’s earned a reputation as one of the more insightful minds in electronic music as well. Planets does not betray this role, as it largely pays homage to Gustav Holst’s 1916 score, The Planets.
Being that Jeff Mills is one to march to the beat of his own drum (or drum machine, as it were), techno enthusiasts might not necessarily expect him to release any of Planets‘ lead singles in the weeks before the album comes out. Nevertheless, when it does arrive next month it’s sure to send ripples through the more cultured circles of the electronic music community.
