Listen: Tchami Tests the Waters of Deep House with “Adieu”

02.03.2017

Just when you think you’ve got Tchami figured out, he puts out a track sure to keep you on your toes. Although established as a bass garage, bass house and G house tastemaker (due in no small part to his Confession artist label) the French DJ and producer has demonstrated a wide creative range by releasing a deep house single titled “Adieu.”

Fans of more traditional deep house will likely find themselves pleasantly surprised by Tchami’s significant stylistic departure. A pillowy xylophone melody precedes an expertly fine-tuned bass line in the slow buildup of “Adieu” before a soulful female vocal rings out serenely over the top line.

Ironically, Tchami is widely credited as the originator of the future house genre – although Dutch superstar Oliver Heldens essentially commandeered the style in the years that would follow. Although Tchami’s first breakout release was incidentally a remix of Janet Jackson‘s “Go Deep,” the metallic, FQ-sequenced bass lines of future house share little in common with deep house despite having commonly been referred to as such by the youngest generation of music fans.

Following future house’s mainstream explosion, Tchami proved himself a versatile enough innovator not to let the coopting of his style slow down his career. Confession’s recent Alchemy compilation, for instance, exhibits a marriage of concept and craftsmanship uncommon to the genres championed by the imprint.

At present, it remains unclear whether Tchami’s exploration of deep house will extend past “Adieu.” To find the song on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify, click here.
